Your first gym session: what to expect and what to bring
Nobody talks about the real barrier to starting at a gym: not knowing how anything works. Where do you change? Is someone judging your squat? What if you sit on a machine backwards? Here's the honest walkthrough, so day one holds zero surprises.
Pack this, skip the rest
- Training clothes, anything you can move in. Nobody cares about the brand.
- Clean indoor shoes, worn into the gym, not from the street.
- A towel, for you and for the bench. Basic gym courtesy everywhere in Thailand.
- A water bottle, refill stations beat buying bottles all session.
- Optional: headphones, a padlock preference, a shaker. That's genuinely all.
The first ten minutes
You check in at reception, get shown the locker rooms, change, and walk out onto the floor. At Universe your free trial starts with a short guided orientation, the nine zones, where things live, how the machines adjust, so you're never standing in the middle of 1,400 m² wondering what's next.
A first hour that works
Forget destroying yourself, day one is about learning the room. A simple structure:
- 5–10 minutes easy cardio. A treadmill walk or bike spin at conversation pace. You're warming up and settling in.
- 4–6 machines, two easy sets each. Machines first, not free weights, they guide the movement while you learn it. Pick a leg press, a chest press, a row, a shoulder press. Choose a weight where 12 reps feels controlled.
- 10 minutes of anything you enjoyed. More cardio, a stretch, a first look at the free-weight zone.
- Cool down. At Universe that can literally mean the pool or a first careful ice-bath dip.
Three quiet rules of gym etiquette
Wipe the bench after use, put weights back where they came from, and don't sit on a machine while scrolling your phone between long rests. Do those three things and you'll fit in anywhere on earth.
About feeling watched
Here's the secret: everyone is focused on their own workout. The people who look intimidating were beginners once and remember it clearly, gym regulars are overwhelmingly helpful if you ask a question. And if you'd rather start with structure, a personal-training consultation gives you a guided programme from session one.
Sore tomorrow is normal. Wrecked tomorrow means you did too much. Aim for "I could have done a bit more", that's what brings you back on day three, and day three is what matters.
Day one is free here
